What About Kua Number 5?

A calculated Kua 5 is traditionally reassigned as Kua 2 for males and Kua 8 for females.

How Is the Kua Number Related to the Lo Shu Grid?

The Kua Number and the Lo Shu Grid are both connected with traditional Chinese numerology and Feng Shui, but they are used for different purposes.

A Kua Number is mainly calculated from a person's birth year and gender. It is traditionally used to identify favourable and unfavourable compass directions, such as directions associated with success, health, relationships and personal stability.

A Lo Shu Grid is created using the complete date of birth. The numbers in the date are placed into a 3 × 3 grid to study missing numbers, repeated numbers, number combinations and behavioural tendencies.

In simple terms, the Kua Number focuses on directional guidance, while the Lo Shu Grid focuses on date-of-birth number patterns. They may be used together as separate tools, but one does not replace the other.

You can create your personal grid using our Lo Shu Grid Calculator.

East Group vs West Group Kua Numbers

In Eight Mansions Feng Shui, Kua numbers are traditionally divided into two groups: the East Group and the West Group. People within the same group share the same general set of favourable compass directions, although the role of each direction—such as Success, Health, Relationships or Stability—depends on the individual Kua number.

Kua GroupKua NumbersGeneral Favourable DirectionsGeneral Unfavourable Directions
East Group1, 3, 4 and 9North, South, East and SoutheastNortheast, Southwest, West and Northwest
West Group2, 6, 7 and 8Northeast, Southwest, West and NorthwestNorth, South, East and Southeast

What Does Your Kua Group Tell You?

Your Kua group identifies the broad set of compass directions traditionally considered more supportive for you. For example, a person in the East Group generally receives favourable directions from North, South, East and Southeast.

However, these four directions do not have the same meaning for every East Group Kua number. One direction may represent Sheng Chi, or Success, while another may represent Tian Yi, or Health. The calculator identifies the exact category assigned to each compass direction for your personal Kua number.

What Happens When Family Members Belong to Different Groups?

Members of the same household may belong to different Kua groups. In that situation, it may not be practical to arrange the entire home around one person's directions. Instead, personal areas such as a bed, work desk, study chair or regular seating position may be adjusted individually where practical.

Kua directions are part of a traditional Feng Shui belief system and are not scientifically proven. Practical comfort, safety, ventilation, lighting and room usability should remain the main considerations.

Step by Step Demo with Example:

1

Example 1: Male, 10-10-1989

2

Sum and reduce the last two digits of the birth year to a single digit: Last two digits of 1989: 8 + 9 = 17. Reduce 17 to a single digit: 1 + 7 = 8

3

If born before 2000, subtract this single digit from 10: 10 - 8 = 2. Kua number: The result is 2.

4

Example 2: Female, 10-10-1989

5

Sum and reduce the last two digits of the birth year to a single digit: Last two digits of 1989: 8 + 9 = 17. Reduce 17 to a single digit: 1 + 7 = 8

6

Add 5 to this single digit and reduce again to a single digit: 8 + 5 = 13. Reduce 13 to a single digit: 1 + 3 = 4. Kua number: The result is 4.

How to Calculate Kua Number:

First, add the last two digits of your birth year and reduce the total to a single digit. Then apply the formula based on gender and whether the birth year is before 2000 or from 2000 onward.

Male Born Before 2000

Reduce the last two digits of the birth year to one digit, then subtract that number from 10.

Example: 1989 → 8 + 9 = 17 → 1 + 7 = 8
10 − 8 = 2

Female Born Before 2000

Reduce the last two digits of the birth year to one digit, add 5, and reduce again if needed.

Example: 1989 → 8 + 9 = 17 → 1 + 7 = 8
8 + 5 = 13 → 1 + 3 = 4

Male Born in 2000 or Later

Reduce the last two digits of the birth year to one digit, then subtract that number from 9.

Example: 2008 → 0 + 8 = 8
9 − 8 = 1

Female Born in 2000 or Later

Reduce the last two digits of the birth year to one digit, add 6, and reduce again if needed.

Example: 2008 → 0 + 8 = 8
8 + 6 = 14 → 1 + 4 = 5

Special Rule for Kua Number 5

If the final result is 5, use Kua Number 2 for males and Kua Number 8 for females.
